Gary the Goalkeeper
MATCH REPORT by Phil Stopford.
This is the first time the two sides have played, Soccer Painters being new to the league this season, and a bit fresh out he womb too. The first ten minutes were a feeling out process as both teams kept possession well but couldn't create any clear cut chances. A returning Chris Aggers playing in the AMC role trying to feed stand-In centre forward Marius and wingers James Patarou and Redd Hutchinson, (in his first league start for Birkbeck), at every opportunity. Birkbeck took the lead midway through the first half. Sean Preston arriving at the back post to volley in a Martin Hutchinson corner kick. Soccer Painters young heads noticeably dropped after going a goal down and Birky were unlucky not to go two goals up as James Patarou beat the keep only to see the ball roll past the far post. That near miss was a lift to Painters who started getting back in to the game, with nice interplay from the back but the final ball was constantly cut down by he defence, James Javes and new goalkeeper Gary especially having solid first halves. The second half started in the same vein, both teams looking to dominate possession. Five minutes in Patarou broke down the right and crossed in for Marius to shoot and beat the keep at the near post for 2-0 to Birkbeck. Birkbeck pushed for a third, and on two occasions Martin Hutchinson was unlucky not to reach through balls from substitute Phil Stopford. As the game continued the youth of Painters was clear to see with them dominating the play but were unable to find a way through a very disciplined Birkbeck all over the pitch, defending solidly to see out a deserved 2-0 victory and second straight win for Sean Preston's men. |
