MATCH REPORT by Phil Stopford
Second game in charge for Sean Preston and Birky lined up with familiar 4-2-3-1 formation of previous seasons. It remains to be seen whether to 3-5-2 experiment from the week before will be tried again... One new player, Tony Collins making his debut and Martin Hutchinson deputised as captain the absence of Adam Meagher. Chris Agathangelou joined James Javes at the back, making up a ball playing centre half partnership. Birky started brightly, immediately making sharp passes into feet and pressing The Orienteers high up in their own half. Playing out from the back with Chris and JJ worked well from the outset and with Martin and Jonny dominating the midfield. With a free kick won on the edge of the opposing box the manager decided in was the perfect time for a quick reorganisation that saw him come on for Martin at centre midfield and Jonny shift to left back with Charlie Stannard taking to the field in place of Phil Stopford. Manager Sean proceeded to hit a poor free kick straight into the bottom of the wall....... 1 - 0. Birky's first goal game from a lofted ball out from the back by Chris sending George James down the right wing, beating the full back with easy and crossing for Redd Hutchinson's first goal for the club with a neat finish. Birkbeck continued to dominate the play well into the second half not letting The Orienteers create many chances. Defence was solid and then Marius Ceorcea decided to do his best impression of René Higuita (also supporting a Higuita keeper shirt too), and tried to take on their striker. The resulting confusion lead to a goal line clearance from (I couldn't see whom it was, sorry but well done you). Still 1 - 0, JUST. 2 -0. With the game entering the final 10 minutes and another slight reshuffle of personal that now saw Phil "leading" the attack flanked by George and Tony. Chris launched a throw-in down the right side, their defender misjudged the bounce of the ball and Phil was free down the right to whip a ball in to George to finish well, with his left peg too. 3 - 0 . Quick break out from the back, George carried the ball down the left side, cutting in side and drawing out the keeper, with the goal gapping wide for Martin to finish the game off he unselfishly passed it back to George for the tap in to kill the game off with the third and well deserved goal for Birky. Good showing in a winning effort this week. Birky are looking good for the new season that starts in two weeks and with plenty of options all over the pitch, competition for places in the start XI will be fierce this year. With talent and quality through out the squad, promotion from the Fourth Division is a minimum this season. |
