MATCH REPORT by Phil Stopford
Birkbeck Orient ended a 4-match winless streak with victory over Fish Island, thanks to single goal from player/manager Sean Preston. The unmarked Preston put the Orient ahead midway through the first half on when he arrived to tap home a loose ball following on from a Martin Hutchinson corner. The victory was Birkbeck’s first in the league since easily beating Quinine 6-1 back in early November. The only negative for the Orient was a nasty injury to goal-scorer Preston, who’s head met the boot of a Fish player after nipping in ahead of him to win a header. Manager Preston was withdrawn at half-time and took himself off to hospital to get stitched up. Fish Island only fleetingly threatened the Orient goal as they fell to their seventh defeat in nine league games. The whole of the Birkbeck defence, led by Captain Adam Meagher held solid through-out the game and restricted Fish Island to very few chances. Goalkeeper Marius Ceorcea saved well from a 25-yard drive in the first half and a well stuck free kick in the second half. The victory keeps Birkbeck finally posed in third place after nine games, with Bow Badgers and Football Club 22 three and five points ahead respectively. With the team spirit back up after a well fought win this week, Orient will look to continue the winning form that saw them top the league earlier in the year. |
